An essential for anyone studying or planning to study in Australia is the Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is your lifelong education number, a unique combination of letters and numbers that gives you access to your personal USI account. Through this account, you can view all your training results from every provider, including completed units and qualifications. The best part? It’s free and stays with you for life!
The USI simplifies tracking your National Vocational Education and Training (VET) achievements, consolidating all your records in one secure place. It also ensures that your training records are safe from being lost or misplaced—a significant advantage.
From 1 January 2015, a USI has been required for enrolment or re-enrolment in any nationally recognised training. This includes TAFE courses, apprenticeships, and diploma programs.

Why is the USI important?
The USI initiative addresses challenges in accessing complete training records from a single online source. By having a USI, you can provide training providers with an authenticated, online record of your achievements. It also assists with enrolment processes and assessing credit transfers.
The USI is a cornerstone of the VET Reform Agenda, promoting transparency and consistency across the system. It provides critical data to improve VET performance and ensure students’ needs are met. Developed in collaboration with students, providers, and policymakers, the USI is designed to make a tangible difference to your educational journey.
